Maree in Hong Kong for YMCA

Gatehouse resident and former Drop In member, Maree Innes, was invited to represent UK YMCA's at the YMCA World Conference in Hong Kong in July this year.  During the two week trip, delelgates from YMCA's around the world reflected on the work of the YMCA over the past four years and mapped out priorities for the coming 4 years.  Maree said "It was an amazing learning experience, just sharing the different works of different YMCA's throughout the world has dramatically increased my understanding of the movement as a whole and the millions of young people we serve in our communities, countries and on a Global, level."  The trip was part funded by a £200 grant from the Gatehouse YMCA.

Band Night at the Drop In

The first Friday in October saw the Drop In centre playing host to a band night.  The bands, which were made up of young people from Gatehouse, entertained 40 young revellers for 2 hours at the centre.  The evening saw Cameron O'Hagan doing an acoustic set and Sweet Relief, the main act for the night, really getting the crowd jumping with a mixture of Indie, Garage and Punk music.  A great night was had by all and the money raised went to the Drop In centre.  Thanks must go to the volunteers who made sure the night ran smoothly, the bands for entertaining everyone and all the people who came along and supported this great night.

Drop-in play the Police

June saw the Gatehouse Under 18 team take the Dumfries & Galloway Police team on at football in Garries Park.  The match was organinsed by PC Steele Johnston, who is the community police officer in Gatehouse.  This exciting match ended in a 6 - 6 draw and had to be decided on penalties.  The match was a great success and more future matches are already being organised.  The day saw £200 being raised in a sweepstake which will be shared between the Drop-in and MacMillan Cancer Support.

Christian Group visit

During the last week of July, the Gatehouse Christian Fellowship hosted 25 young people for a week.  The group, who all camped in the Fleet Valley, were hosted at the Drop in centre for an evening of fun and games.  The young people all mixed really well and filled their evening with pool & darts, board games, Band Hero and much much more.

Also during their stay, the YMCA played the visitors at football in Garries park.  Both sides played their socks off and ended in a 3 - 0 win for the home team.  A massive thank you needs to go to Ian Cain for taking himself out of his sick bed organising and refereeing the match - this really couldn't have happened without him.

On 2nd July 2010, a group from Gatehouse Drop in went Go-Karting to E-motion Karting just outside Ayr.  This is a trip which the young people had been asking for for ages.  The evening, which was made up of 2 girls and 10 boys, lasted for about an hour and inlcuded practise sessions and a mini grand prix.  The trip was part funded by D&G council and by the families of the people who went.  It was a great night and great fun was had by all.

Laggan Outdoor Trip

At the beginning of May, some of the girls from the Drop In Centre went for a fun filled multi activity day at Laggan Outdoor, near Gatehouse.  The 4 girls enjoyed activities such as Archery and Mountain Boarding.  They also tried Grass Sledging and Reverse Steer Jeep driving, although not everyones steering skills were up to scratch and the instructor had to take over at times!  Commenting on her day, one of the girls said " The Mountain Boarding was the best.  I crashed but I was OK.  The Grass Sledging was quite fast and the sledges had brakes you could steer with.  The Reverse Steer Jeep Driving was really confusing."

The trip was part funded by grant money from Dumfries & Galloway Council and money raised at the Charity Shop.
